One price, one contract, and the wiring done by someone registered to do it

Why this exists

Getting a home charger in New Zealand currently means one of three unsatisfying things. Guide sites give you a range and then hand you off. Electricians quote after a home visit, one city at a time, and often only tell you about the switchboard once they're standing in front of it. Charger brands will sell you the box and leave the install to you, or sell you their own brand installed and nothing else.

The range everyone quotes is $1,500 to $2,500 for a 7kW install. That's a $1,000 spread on a job where the two things that decide the number, your switchboard and the cable run, are visible in photographs you can take in five minutes. So we quote from photographs, put the switchboard work in the same quote as a named price, and hold the balance until the certificate is issued.

What we are, exactly

We are the seller and the project manager. We choose and supply the charger, read your photos with the installer, set one price, hold the contract with you, and carry the seller's obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

We are not electricians.We hold no electrical registration and never do prescribed electrical work. A registered electrician from our contracted partner installer does every part of that work, tests it and issues the Certificate of Compliance in their own name. That's the law, and it's also the right way round: you want the person who did the wiring to be the person who certifies it.

How we choose installers

Before any work is subcontracted we check each electrician's registration on the public Electrical Workers Registration Board register and keep the evidence, and we hold a copy of the installer's public liability certificate. We look for Evnex certification, because that's the charger range we sell at launch.

We'll name our installer on this site once a subcontract is signed and they've given written permission to be named. Until then we say “our partner installer”, because naming someone we haven't contracted would be a lie, and there are enough of those in this market.

What we don't claim

• No reviews, ratings or testimonials. We haven't done a job yet, and inventing them is fraud
• No install counts, years trading or “trusted by” logos
• No electrical registration, licence number or trade accreditation of our own
• No installed price until our installer's written trade rates exist. Sourced market ranges instead, with the source and the date
• No named installer until the subcontract and the permission are real

This site had an earlier version that listed twelve installer businesses with registration numbers. Those businesses did not exist. They have been removed and those URLs now return 410 Gone so they drop out of Google.

Where we are up to

Quotes are free and open now. Deposits and bookings open region by region, as each installer subcontract is signed. Our own installed prices go up the same day the trade rates are agreed, and they have to sit at or below Evnex's own direct price, or the page has to say plainly what we add for the difference.
