Home EV charging, explained without the sales pitch
Every number on these pages has a source and a date. Where we don't have a source, we say so rather than making one up. Four guides at launch, six more coming.
EV charger installation cost in New Zealand
Most 7kW home EV charger installs in New Zealand cost $1,500 to $2,500 all up, charger included. Three-phase 11–22kW jobs run $2,500 to $5,000. The number that moves your price most is your switchboard: an older board with no spare capacity adds $1,500 to $3,000.
Read the cost guide →GuideThe five photos we need to price your EV charger install
Five phone photos are enough to price most home EV charger installs: your switchboard with the door open, the same board with the door closed, the wall where the charger goes, where you park, and the route between them. Each one answers a specific question that would otherwise need a site visit.

Your switchboard needs work if it has no spare way, no RCD protection, or still runs on ceramic rewireable fuses. In New Zealand that adds $1,500 to $3,000 to an EV charger install. A board with spare capacity and RCDs usually needs nothing at all.

Installing an EV charger is prescribed electrical work on your home's fixed wiring, so a registered electrician must do it and must give you a Certificate of Compliance. The CoC is your written record that the work was designed, installed and tested to AS/NZS 3000. Keep it.

Almost every New Zealand home is single phase, which caps a charger at 7.4kW: roughly a full day's driving range added overnight. Three phase allows 11kW or 22kW, but only helps if your car's onboard charger can accept it, and most cars sold here can't.
