EV charger installation cost in New Zealand

Most 7kW home EV charger installs in New Zealand cost $1,500 to $2,500 all up, charger included. Three-phase 11–22kW jobs run $2,500 to $5,000. The number that moves your price most is your switchboard: an older board with no spare capacity adds $1,500 to $3,000.

This page gives you the range, shows what each part of it is, and then tells you exactly which four things decide your number, all of which are visible in photographs you can take in five minutes.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in NZ?

$1,500 to $2,500 for a typical 7kW single-phase install, charger included. That is the published New Zealand range and it has been stable through 2026. Evnex, which sells chargers direct with installation, puts a simple install at around $1,000 of labour on top of the charger, and a complex one at $3,500 to $4,000 all up. EECA's own figures break it down as $1,000 to $1,500 for the charger and $500 to $1,000 for the installation.

What are you actually paying for?

Two things, and they are worth separating because they move independently. The hardware is a fixed, published number you can look up. The labour is the part nobody will commit to without seeing your house, which is what this whole site exists to fix.

What decides where you sit in the range?

Four things, in order of how much money they move. All four are visible in photographs, which is why we quote from photos instead of sending someone to your house.

  1. Your switchboard. Does it have a spare way, and does it have RCD protection? A board that does adds nothing. A board that doesn't adds $1,500 to $3,000. This is the single biggest variable in New Zealand quotes.
  2. The distance from the board to the charger. A charger three metres from the switchboard is a short surface run. A charger in a detached garage forty metres away is a long run and possibly trenching.
  3. What the wall is made of. Timber framing is straightforward. Brick, block and concrete cost more to fix to and to run cable through.
  4. Single phase or three phase. Almost every New Zealand home is single phase, which caps you at 7.4kW. That is fine for nearly everyone. Going to three phase where it doesn't exist is a lines-company job, quoted separately.

What does a standard install include?

Nobody in New Zealand publishes this in writing, which is why "fixed price" so often stops being fixed on install day. In the UK, Pod defines a standard installation as fitting to a suitable wall, up to 15 metres of cable from the supply to the charger, all connections and protection, and a consumer unit if one is needed. We've written ours down in the same spirit.

  • The charger itself, new, with the maker's residential warranty in your name
  • Fixed to a suitable wall in the spot agreed from your photos
  • Its own circuit and protection device in your existing switchboard
  • A surface-mounted cable run from the board to the charger, up to the length written in your quote
  • Testing, commissioning and setting the charger up on your phone
  • The Certificate of Compliance from the registered electrician who did the work

Is there a government subsidy for a home EV charger?

No. There is no New Zealand government subsidy or rebate for installing a home EV charger. EECA maintains an approved list of smart chargers and publishes running-cost guidance, but there is no grant attached to it. What does save you money is charging off-peak: EECA puts home charging at about $14 per 100km and off-peak home charging at about $11 per 100km, against about $19 per 100km on a public fast charger, all including road user charges.

How do you get a fixed price instead of a range?

Turning the range into one fixed price

  1. Pick a charger, or don't

    Choose one of the packages, or pick 'help me choose' and we'll recommend one with your price. Your car's maximum AC charging rate usually settles it.

  2. Send five photos

    Your switchboard with the door open and closed, the wall where the charger goes, where you park, and the route between them. Phone photos are fine. What each photo tells us.

  3. Get one price by email

    We check the photos with our installer and send one fixed price: the charger, the install and the certificate, plus any switchboard or extra work priced separately and clearly.

  4. Accept and pay a deposit

    A $500 deposit, fully refundable any time before installation starts. The installer books a date with you.

  5. Pay the balance after the certificate

    The electrician tests the work and issues the Certificate of Compliance. Then, and only then, we invoice the balance.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in New Zealand?

Why won't anyone give me a price without visiting?

Because the two things that move the price most, your switchboard and the cable run, are unknown to them until someone looks. Photographs answer both. Evnex already quotes from photos with no site visit, and so do Pod and Octopus in the UK. There's no technical reason a New Zealand electrician can't.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?

Maybe. What matters is whether the board has a spare way and RCD protection. Boards with ceramic fuses and no residual current devices generally need work first, at $1,500 to $3,000. A photo of the board with its door open answers it in seconds. More on switchboard upgrades.

Is a 3-pin plug really that bad?

It works, but it's slow. EECA puts a dedicated smart charger at about three times the speed of a standard 3-pin plug, and a wall charger is designed for hours of continuous full-load current in a way a general-purpose socket and its circuit are not.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Installing a charger involves prescribed electrical work on your home's fixed wiring, so a registered electrician must do it and must issue a Certificate of Compliance. Keep it: it's your record that the work was done and tested properly. What the CoC is.

Is there a subsidy or rebate in New Zealand?

No. There is no government subsidy for a home EV charger. EECA publishes an approved smart-charger list and running-cost figures, but no grant.

How much does charging at home actually cost to run?

EECA puts home charging at about $14 per 100km, off-peak home charging at about $11, and public fast charging at about $19, all including road user charges. A smart charger schedules itself to the off-peak window automatically.
