Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Your switchboard needs work if it has no spare way, no RCD protection, or still runs on ceramic rewireable fuses. In New Zealand that adds $1,500 to $3,000 to an EV charger install. A board with spare capacity and RCDs usually needs nothing at all.

This is the question that decides whether your charger install costs $2,000 or $5,000, and it's the reason so many New Zealand quotes are ranges. The good news is that it's answerable from a single photograph of the inside of your switchboard, in about ten seconds, by anyone who does this for a living.

What does an EV charger actually need from the switchboard?

Three things. A spare way for a new dedicated circuit. Enough headroom in the supply for a 32-amp continuous load on top of what the house already draws. And residual current protection on that circuit, which modern boards have as standard and old ones often don't.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in NZ?

$1,500 to $3,000 on top of the charger install, which is the published New Zealand range and by far the biggest single variable in a charger quote. That's a real number, not a scare tactic: it's why we ask for the board photo before quoting anything, and why our quote prices the board work as a named line rather than a footnote saying "extras may apply".

Can load management avoid the upgrade?

Sometimes, and it's worth asking about. If the problem is headroom rather than protection, a smart charger with a power sensor on the incoming supply can throttle the charger down when the house is drawing heavily, so the total never exceeds what the supply can carry. Do I have to upgrade the whole board?

Not always. An electrician can sometimes add a small sub-board fed from the main one, which gives the charger its own protected circuit without replacing everything. Whether that's sensible depends on the state of the main board, and it's a judgement the electrician makes from the photo and confirms on the day. Either way, the price is in your quote before you pay.

Who is allowed to do the work?

A registered electrician, and only a registered electrician. Work on your home's fixed wiring is prescribed electrical work: the person doing it must be registered and licensed, and must issue a Certificate of Compliance when it's done. We are not electricians. We quote and manage the job, and a registered electrician from our partner installer does every bit of the electrical work and signs the certificate.

Can I put an EV charger on an old fuse board?

Not as it stands. A rewireable ceramic fuse board has no residual current protection and no way to add a protected 32-amp circuit safely. It needs replacing first.

It shouldn't. A charger is installed on its own correctly-sized circuit, and if the supply is tight, load management can throttle the charger when the house is drawing heavily rather than tripping anything.

Does a new house need switchboard work?

Usually not. Boards installed in the last fifteen years generally have RCD protection and spare ways, which is exactly what a charger circuit needs. We still confirm it from the photo.

Is the upgrade included in your fixed price?
